Mortal Shell 2 Shells

Eight lost warriors, each with their own flesh, their own memories, and their own way of fighting. The shell-binding heart of Mortal Shell II, catalogued.

The Complete Shell Roster

The official Mortal Shell site confirms eight playable Shells in Mortal Shell II, and the Devout Edition's eight Obsidian skins match that count one-for-one. Two of the eight — Proxima the Broodseeker and Tiel the Acolyte — plus the returning Eredrim the Venerable were shown by name in the official gameplay reveal. The remaining names below come from consistent early player reports and are flagged as community-verified until official descriptions land.

Roster caveat

The eight names in this table match every early source we have cross-checked, but full titles, abilities and locations for several Shells are still being verified post-launch. Anything not confirmed by the official site or the Steam page is labeled above — and this page will be updated as information hardens.

Officially Confirmed Shells

Cold Symmetry's official gameplay reveal — published on the Mortal Shell site and Steam news — explicitly depicted three playable Shells carving different paths through the world:

  • Proxima, The Broodseeker — one of the three showcased Shells; player reports say she can be unlocked almost immediately after the prologue.
  • Tiel, The Acolyte — described in the same reveal; in the open beta players found Tiel's Shell in the early Mushroom Village area.
  • Eredrim, The Venerable — a returning favorite from the 2020 original, rebuilt for the sequel's stamina-free combat.

Each official Shell has its own active ability and stat spread, and the Devout Edition's Obsidian skins confirm the full eight-shell lineup visually.

Player-Reported Shells

The remaining five Shells — Gragu, Smert, Genessa, Lazlo and Sariel — are named consistently across early unlock-all-shells guides. Locations reported by players: Gragu and Lazlo are found in mid-game regions, Smert's Shell is tied to a side path, Genessa requires a specific unlock step, and Sariel is among the last Shells collected. These details are still single-source at the time of writing and are being cross-verified.

The Prologue Shell: Harros the Vassal

Like the first game, Mortal Shell II opens with Harros the Vassal — the shell the game hands you before the world opens. Player reports describe the prologue as Harros's introduction, after which you leave his body behind (or return to it) to seek the eight true Shells of the roster. The open beta's official announcement told players their journey as the Harbinger would begin with "claiming your first shells," which matches this structure.

How Shells Work

Shells are the core of Mortal Shell II's identity. You possess a fallen warrior's body to take on their stats, health pool and unique active ability, while your own progression — Glimpses spent on skill points, weapons upgraded with Tarstones — carries between bodies. Early guides stress three things about the system:

  • Glimpses are limited. Spend skill points deliberately; respecs exist but are not unlimited.
  • Shell binding and upgrades matter. Binding a Shell deepens your connection to it and unlocks its full stat potential.
  • Match Shell to weapon. A heavy Shell with a slow hammer and an agile Shell with the Axatana play like different games — see the builds page for combinations.

Shell FAQ

Can I switch Shells mid-run? Yes — possession is the point. Once you find a Shell in the world you can bind it and swap between your collected Shells at most checkpoints. Do Shells have different health and stamina? Health and stat spreads differ per Shell; stamina no longer gates combat, but each Shell's speed, poise and ability still change how fights feel.
